The Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) is the latest sports organisation to delve into the world of NFTs having agreed a partnership with Splinterlands.
Splinterlands is working on Genesis League Soccer (GLS) which will help MLSPA generate new revenues and grow individual brands thanks to its play-to-earn structure.
GLS is the blockchain developer’s first game with a major sporting organisation and will appeal to fans of Major League Soccer (MLS) and its franchises using popular card-based mechanics.
MLSPA chief operating officer Dan Jones said: “As the MLSPA continues to expand our players’ commercial footprint, we strive to identify partners at the cutting edge of innovation, technology, and new category creation.
“Joining forces with Splinterlands, a pioneer and demonstrated leader in the fast-expanding world of PTE gaming, allows our players to shape the future and create new gaming experiences to engage fans around the world.”
NFT players cards curated using in-match events and statistics will be up for grabs for players to collect and trade in what Splinterlands is hoping will become a flagship title.
Splinterlands co-founder and chief executive officer Jesse Reich said: “This is an incredible innovation in the sports industry, and MLSPA is one of its biggest players.
“Web 3.0 offers new standards and development possibilities set by its community members, and these form a new pathway to massive opportunity for all involved: for those within the industry as well as for fans and sports enthusiasts.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with them in this ground-breaking model, and I look forward to these exciting ways of connecting sports, gaming, crypto, NFTs, DeFi, and blockchain technology.”
Earlier this week MLS signed a Bored Ape NFT on a professional contract. ‘Striker’ will join the league before the MLS All-Star Game on August 10.
