Nike’s Web3 subsidiary RTFKT has acquired the dotswoosh.eth domain for 19.72 ethereum (ETH), equal to roughly $35,000.
RTFKT, pronounced artifact, now owns and controls 10 Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domains.
ENS is a domain name provider for the Ethereum blockchain controlled by a decentralised autonomous organization (DAO). Owners of an ENS can issue subdomains controlled fully by the main name holder.
The reason for the purchase is unknown but there has been speculation on Twitter that the brand may want to issue ENS subdomains in the future.
Nike could enable specific NFT holders to register an ENS subdomain under dotswoosh.eth. An example of this would be johnsmith.dotswoosh.eth.
It’s reported that the dotswoosh domain was purchased to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of graphic designer Carolyn Davidson’s infamous ‘swoosh’ first appearing on Nike shoes.
RTFKT owns several other domain names such as skinvial.eth, drmos.eth, mintvial.eth, dreamos.eth, spacedrip.eth, dripcoin.eth, m2tekno.eth, artifacts.eth and rtfkt.eth.
Last year, the popular brand patented the ‘Just Do It’ slogan and affiliated trademarks ‘Nike’, ‘Nikeland’ and ‘Jumpman’ were trademarked for a vast range of metaverse purposes and uses.
After the drop of its Space Drip NFT, the digital shoe enabling its holders to “forge” a physical version of a trainer, Nike made an effort to sue any unofficially licensed Web3 organisation selling Nike sneaker images as NFTs.
