Real Sociedad has partnered with blockchain company Chilliz to launch an official fan token using the Socios.com online platform to boost fan engagement.
Supporters of the La Liga side will be able to interact with their favourite club through the use of the $RSO fan token, allowing them to receive promotions on the platform.
Members of the Socios app will also have the chance to win prizes, receive discounts and vote in questionnaires using the coin, when it’s released later this year.
Socios chief executive Alexandre Dreyfus said: “We are delighted with this agreement with Real Sociedad, a club deeply rooted in its community but at the same time with a clear global vision and commitment to improving the experience of its fans through the technology.”
Real Sociedad become the latest addition to Socios’ roster of partnerships in Europe’s top football divisions having already agreed deals with Arsenal, Manchester City, PSG and Roma.
More than 5,000 fans have won prizes as part of those deals, getting their hands on signed football shirts and other merchandise, as well as match tickets and one-off experiences.
President of Real Sociedad Jokin Aperribay added: “It is a reality that technology is changing our lives and at Real Sociedad we do not want to be oblivious to it.
“We already constantly hear about the metaverse and we also want to get closer to this new reality.”
These partnerships haven’t been welcomed by all supporters though, with a Crystal Palace fan group of 20,000 calling on the club to terminate any deal made with Socios.
They claim the partnership is an “attempt to exploit and profit from fans loyalty through an immoral pay-per-vote crypto scheme”.
